Louisa Ama
At 26, Louisa embodies a rare combination of mountain-forged resilience and worldly elegance. Born in Ghana, she moved to Austria at four when her mother remarried, settling in Eben im Pongau—a village where she and her family were often the first Black people whom locals had ever encountered. Rather than shrinking from the attention, this experience shaped her into someone unafraid to take up
space in the world.
Her sanctuary is the Austrian Alps, where she skis, hikes, and swims, activities nurtured from early ages by her stepfather. Those childhood summers also taught her to make honey-butter bread from scratch (her grandmother's special recipe), to distinguish edible mushrooms from poisonous ones (courtesy of her grandfather), and to find peace in solitude. "You can be who you want to be up there," she reflects about those formative years.
Working now as a personal assistant in Salzburg, Louisa operates on a simple philosophy: She listens to her body. If something brings happiness and energy, she pursues it. If it drains her, she says, "I take my distance." After leaving home at 15, she promised herself to live authentically, surrounding herself only with people who respect and motivate her. When melancholy strikes, she spends time with high-energy friends who remind her why life is worth celebrating.
Things that bring her joy include her family and friends and giving gifts, just because. "I keep a gift list for people close to me," she says, smiling. "If you tell me you loved something when you were a child, I write it down, and every time I see it, I buy it and give it the next time I see you. You don't have to wait for a birthday or special occasion." Her friends are also the lucky recipients of her culinary prowess and sharing her culture through cuisine. "I love to make traditional Ghanaian peanut soup with fufu for everyone," she says.
Louisa gives herself things, too, such as grace, evidenced by how she's learned to love parts of herself she once struggled with. Her natural afro, once a source of insecurity, is now worn as a crown.
Her biggest inspiration is her sister Rebecca, three years older and living in Vienna. Their bond, difficult during different childhood phases, has deepened into something unshakable. "I can call her at 3 a.m., and she takes time to listen," Louisa says and adds that her sister pushes and encourages her to make the most of life. "When you wake up every day and say, 'I love my life,'" she says, grinning, "that's a life well lived."
